WINONA, Minn. — Amy Edge (Mineral Point, Wis.) enjoyed a career year this past season as a member of the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team.

And those efforts have not gone unnoticed.

Edge, already named to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team, as well as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Midwest Region Second Team and the CoSIDA Academic All-District V First Team., added another post-season honor Thursday, as the junior catcher was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team.

A second-team selection as a sophomore last season, Edge — a biology/physical therapy major who boasts a 3.95 GPA — was the only Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player named to the Academic All-America First Team. St. Thomas' Kristi Huegel, a second-team selection, was the only other MIAC player on any of the three teams.

Edge becomes the third SMU player named to the Academic All-America First Team. Jackie Huegel earned the same honor a year ago, while Jill Hocking was a first-team — and the Academic All-America of the Year recipient — in 2001.

Edge started all 36 games in leading the Cardinals to a 23-15 overall record — SMU's 11th straight season with 20 or more wins. The junior catcher led Saint Mary's in virtually every offensive category. She boasted a team-best .416 batting average (42-for-101), and also led the team in doubles (14), home runs (3), RBis (32), walks (14) and on-base percentage (.483). The junior catcher also had 11 multiple-RBI games, and posted a season-best nine-game hitting streak.

A second-team academic all-district pick as a sophomore last season, Edge is one of two players from the MIAC named to this year's first team.

The CoSIDA Academic All-America team is part of the Academic All-America program, administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Top student-athletes from non-Division I programs in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ontario and Manitoba are eligible for inclusion on the College Division teams. Student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials.
