Huegel, Edge named Verizon Academic All-District

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary’s University fastpitch softball players Jackie Huegel (Alta Vista, Iowa) and Amy Edge (Mineral Point, Wis.) have been named to the Verizon College Division Academic All-District V team, it was announced Wednesday.

Huegel, a senior accounting/management major with a 3.629 grade-point average, was a first-team selection for the second straight year, while Edge, a sophomore catcher, was a second-team selection.

Huegel was among the Cardinals' leaders in virtually every offensive category. SMU's starting shortstop for four straight years and a member of the 2000 national championship team, Huegel hit .374, collecting a team-high 40 hits — including 11 doubles, six triples and a home run — in 107 at-bats. She also drove in 23 runs, scored 28 times, boasted a .617 slugging percentage and stole 10 bases.

A two-time Academic All-District selection, Huegel also boasted 11 multiple-hit, six multiple-RBI games and a .947 field percentage, committing just seven errors in 131 chances.
After missing the final three games of last season due to a shoulder injury — snapping a 122-game consecutive start streak — Huegel began a new streak, starting all 34 games for the Cardinals this season.

Huegel was one of seven players from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference named to the 11-member team. Joining Huegel from the MIAC were Stacy Tamble, Gina Utecht and Shannon Moore from St. Thomas, Gustavus' Molly Biehn and Christina Diller, and Bethel's Emily Conover.

Edge, a biology/physical therapy major who boasts a 3.92 GPA, enjoyed her most successful season as a Cardinal, hitting a team-leading .390 (39-for-100), with nine doubles, and team-bests in home runs (2) and RBIs (26).

The Verizon Academic All-District team is part of the Verizon Academic All-America program, administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Top student-athletes from non-Division I programs in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ontario and Manitoba are eligible for inclusion on the College Division district team. Student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials.

First-team members advance to the Verizon Academic All-America ballot, which is voted on by a select committee of CoSIDA members from across the country.
