Jackie Huegel named to NFCA All-Region Third-Team

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary’s University fastpitch softball player Jackie Huegel (Alta Vista, Iowa) was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Region Third Team, it was announced Friday.

Huegel was among the Cardinals' leaders in virtually every offensive category. SMU's starting shortstop for four straight years and a member of the 2000 national championship team, Huegel hit .374, collecting a team-high 40 hits — including 11 doubles, six triples and a home run — in 107 at-bats. She also drove in 23 runs, scored 28 times, boasted a .617 slugging percentage and stole 10 bases.

A three-time All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection and a two-time Verizon Academic All-District V first-teamer, Huegel also boasted 11 multiple-hit, six multiple-RBI games and a .947 field percentage, committing just seven errors in 131 chances.

After missing the final three games of last season due to a shoulder injury — snapping a 122-game consecutive start streak — Huegel began a new streak, starting all 34 games for the Cardinals this season.

Huegel, an All-Region pick for the fourth straight year, was one of 14 MIAC players named to the three All-Region teams.

Molly Biehn and Audrey Lenoch of Gustavus, St. Thomas' Gina Utecht, Hamline's Amanda Gage and Emily Deuth, Kristen Lideen of Augsburg and Kara Wager of Bethel were first-team selections, while Michelle Wong and Stacy Tamble of St. Thomas, Julia Rassini of Hamline, and Karrie Bateman of Bethel were named to the second team.

Joining Huegel on the third team from the MIAC were Gustavus' Jenny Ebanks and St. Thomas' Nikki Conway.
