League-leading Hamline promises to be huge test for Cardinals

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University fastpitch softball team found itself on two separate roads during its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against St. Olaf.

Fortunately for the Cardinals, both roads led to the same place.

SMU took the high road in the opener, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings en route to a 9-0, five-inning victory.

In the nightcap, the Cardinals found themselves on the low road, waiting until the fifth inning to get on the board. But once the Cardinals plated that first run, the floodgates opened and SMU never looked back, erupting for five runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and six in the seventh in completing the sweep with a 13-0 win.

“We played very well,” understated SMU coach Nikki Fennern, whose team improved to 4-0 in the MIAC and extended its winning streak to five straight with the wins. “We hit the ball great. In the second game alone, we had 42 at-bats — and anytime you can have 42 at-bats in one game, you know you’re doing something right.”

And SMU certainly was doing a thing or two right.

Niki Lynch (Winona, Minn.) and Jackie Huegel (Alta Vista, Iowa) led the Cardinals’ 12-hit offensive attack in the opener, as the seniors both went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBIs.

Amy Edge (Mineral Point, Wis.) was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Cardinals’ charge in the nightcap. Krista Conway (Mendota Heights, Minn.) was 3-for-4, while Huegel and Jenny Schipp (North St. Paul, Minn.) each chipped in two hits.

“Those were two nice wins. But to us, that’s all they were — two nice wins,” said Fennern, whose team takes on league-leading Hamline this afternoon. “We’re happy about the big sweep, but we also know we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.

“St. Olaf was an obstacle standing in the way of us reaching our goals — and Hamline’s another obstacle, and Augsburg (Saturday’s opponent) is another,” continued Fennern. “We can’t afford to get too high after a win, or too low after a loss. We’ve just got to continue to be consistent day-to-day.

“If we do that, the rest will take care of itself.”
