Mother Nature throws monkey wrench in Cardinals' plans

IRONWOOD, Mich. — First, it's no snow.

Now, it's too cold.

The nordic ski season isn't going quite the way Saint Mary's University coach John Skemp would like.

Skemp and skier Michael Uffenbeck (Drummond, Wis.) made the trip to Ironwood, Mich., because there was no snow — or competitions — any closer to home.

And, after a rather successful performance in Saturday's 10-kilometer freestyle event, Skemp was looking for more of the same from Uffenbeck in the classical race the following day.

Mother Nature, however, had other ideas.

With temperatures hovering around around minus-four degrees and windchils even colder, Sunday's second day of competition was cancelled.

"It was too bad that we couldn't ski on Sunday — the snow was awesome," said Skemp. "It's just that there are legal limits as to how cold it can be and still be able to compete. The wind chill just made it too cold. We would have loved to have been able to get in that second race — it was just too dangerous."

At least his skier got in one race.

Uffenbeck placed 38th in the freestyle competition, clocking a time of :36.29.

"Michael skied a strong race," said Skemp. "It was another solid showing."
