The Result St. Olaf 3, Saint Mary's 0 Box Score Conference Standings Through Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000 Up Next Wednesday, Oct. 25: at Rockford, 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28: Hamline, 1 p.m. |
3-goal second-half outburst carries Oles past SMU WINONA, Minn. Heading into Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game, the Saint Mary's University and St. Olaf men's soccer teams had 12 losses between them and all 12 losses had come by one goal. So, it's a safe assumption that when the final horn sounded Saturday, the end result would be a one-goal game, right? Wrong. The Oles scored one minute into the second half, then added two more goals late in a six-minute span late in the half, en route to a 3-0 victory at Ochrymowycz Field. "We played horrible, just horrible," said SMU coach Brad Hauter, whose team dropped to 3-4-1 in the conference and 7-7-1 overall, while St. Olaf kept its conference title hopes alive, improving to 6-1-0 in the MIAC and 8-6-0 overall. "That's the worst I've seen us play in I don't know how long probably all season. We played uninspired, passion-less soccer, and it showed." The teams battled to a 0-0 first-half tie, with SMU missing a pair of golden scoring opportunities when Shawn Stewart (Johnsburg, Ill.) missed on a breakaway and Brad Fox (Woodstock, Ill.) rifled a point-blank shot just wide. Having dodged those two first-half bullets, the Oles quickly cashed in in the second half, getting a goal from Kully Nelson just one minute into the second half. Jason Bezdicek converted a direct kick from 18 yards out at the 80-minute mark to make it 2-0 and Evan Burns completed the scoring six minutes later. "I'm shocked at how flat we came out today, especially considering how well we played Wednesday (in a 1-1 tie with league-leading Macalester)," said Hauter, whose team returns to action Wednesday, traveling to Rockford for a 4 p.m. nonconference game. "Everyone on this team knows how poorly we played how they handle it will determine what happens to this team from here on out." |
