Cardinals fall in overtime for 2nd straight game

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — For the second straight game, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team let a 2-0 lead slip through its grasp, as St. John's scored twice in the second half, and then netted the game-winner early in the overtime to hand the Cardinals a 3-2 setback in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match Saturday.

After seeing a two-goal advantage evaporate in losing to Carleton 3-2 in overtime last Wednesday, the Cardinals got a dose of instant replay on Saturday.

Shawn Stewart (McHenry, Ill.) and Eric Brown (Cary, Ill.) scored for the Cardinals, who led 2-0 until the 74-minute mark, when SJU's Drew Spidahl took a pass from Mark Dodge and beat Cardinal goalie Matt Peck (Eau Claire, Wis.). Less than six minutes later, the Johnnies again scored, this time on a goal by Mike Ritter, to send the game into overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, Noel Quinn beat Peck with the game-winner four minutes into the second extra session.

The Cardinals return to conference action on Wednesday, playing host to Macalester at 3:30 p.m.
