Cardinals battle league-leading Scots to 1-1 tie

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team settled for its first tie in more than four years Wednesday afternoon — but it sure felt more like a win, than a tie.

Fueled by John Brown's late, second-half goal, the Cardinals snapped their two-game losing streak in impressive fashion, battling league-leading Macalester to a 1-1 draw in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.

Macalester jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first half on a Kimani Williams goal, but it was the Cardinals who controlled the play, missing several golden scoring chances, before getting Brown's equalizer off a corner kick at the 70-minute mark.

The Cardinals, who had not played to a draw since a 1-1 deadlock with Simpson on Aug. 31, 1996, return to action Saturday, playing host to St. Olaf in a 1 p.m. MIAC game.
