The Result Saint Mary's 4, Hamline 1 Box Score Conference Standings Through Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000 Up Next Saturday, Nov. 4: Augsburg, 1 p.m. Final Game of Season |
4-goal second half carries Cardinals past Hamline WINONA, Minn. The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team scored four second-half goals en route to a 4-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Hamline Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals, who had not scored a goal in their last two games, found themselves on the short end of a 1-0 score at the half on Saturday as Hamline's Brad Vecker's 45-yard bomb beat SMU goalie Matt Peck (Eau Claire, Minn.) just seven minutes into the game. "When they scored that goal, it was unbelieveable," admitted SMU coach Brad Hauter, whose team snapped a five-game winless streak (0-4-1) with the win. "It was almost like you could see every one of our players saying, 'here we go again.' " Fortunately, the Cardinals rallied around that goal, tying the score five minutes into the second half on a goal by Eric Brown (Cary, Ill.). Shawn Stewart (McHenry, Ill.) then gave SMU the lead for good 10 minutes later, heading in a perfect cross from Jake Endemann (Woodridge, Ill.). Michael Lardner (St. Joseph, Mich.) had a hand in the final two SMU goals, scoring the third when he converted a perfect free kick off a pass from Dan Krocak (New Brighton, Minn.), then setting up John Brown (St. Joseph, Mich.) on the Cardinals' fourth goal three minutes later. "It was good to see us score four goals, to finally finish some of the opportunities we haven't been converting the past couple of weeks," said Hauter, whose team (4-4-1 in the MIAC and 8-8-1 overall) closes out its season next Saturday, playing host to Augsburg in a 1 p.m. game. "This was an important win for us." |
