WINONA, Minn. — Mike Schmitt (Woodridge, Ill.) enjoyed a memorable year for the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team this season.

The Cardinal junior recorded career highs in goals and points — and Friday's selection to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team was the icing on the cake.

An honorable-mention All-MIAC pick a year ago, Schmitt started all 10 conference games for the Cardinals, who finished with a 5-5-0 MIAC mark — their most conference wins since the 2002 season, when SMU finished 5-4-1.

Schmitt finished the season with seven goals — including his first collegiate hat trick in a 4-2 win over Concordia on Oct. 1 — and added two assists for a team-best 16 points. Schmitt not only led the Cardinals in goals and points, but his seven goals and 16 points also ranked second in conference.

For the season, Schmitt posted a team-leading 10 goals and 22 points in 16 games.

Senior defender Mike Boland (Lake Zurich, Ill.), who helped spearhead a Cardinal defense that boasted a 1.48 goals-against-average, was an All-MIAC honorable-mention selection.
