This time, Luzzi not complaining about 0-0 tie vs. Storm
WINONA, Minn. When it came to highs and lows last Saturday, the Saint Marys University mens soccer team had their fair share of both.
When it came to putting the ball in the net, however well, that was another story.
The Cardinals and visiting Simpson played 90 minutes of regulation, and a pair of 10-minute overtime periods, but neither team could find the back of the net as they battled to a 0-0 nonconference tie at Ochrymowycz Field.
"We had a good day as a group," SMU coach Eric Luzzi said. "What didnt we do right? We didnt finish our chances."
This time around, however, Luzzi wasn't complaining about the tie, SMU's second straight after a season-opening 3-0 loss to Loras.
"This tie, I can live with last week's (2-2 tie vs. Edgewood) was another story," said Luzzi. "Simpson is a very good team, and I thought we played pretty well."
Well enough to win which brings us back to the highs and lows:
The low, SMU attempted just seven shots vs. the Storm three of which found the net while Simpson got off 13 shots.
The high, SMU goalie Bob Endemann (Woodridge, Ill.), who, in his third straight start for the Cardinals, collected four saves for the shutout.
"Bob had to make a couple big saves in the first half," Luzzi said. "He saved us a couple times."
Unfortunately, the Cardinals' offense couldn't save Endemann, as SMU was blanked for the second time in three games.
"We're just not making good on the chances we are getting," said Luzzi, whose team opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday at Macalester. "Defensively, we are playing very well, we just can't get the ball to bounce our way.
"We didn't get a ton of shots (vs. Simpson), so we needed to make the ones we did get count."
