WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's soccer coach Eric Luzzi has a simple philosophy — come to the field ready to play and put forth your best possible effort.

Do those two things, and no matter what the final outcome, Luzzi is happy.

Sunday afternoon, Luzzi was not a happy man.

"We did not come ready to play, and it showed," Luzzi said after his team gave up two first-half goals — the second with one second remaining — en route to a 2-0 nonconference loss to UW-Oshkosh. "I have never been the type of person who puts a lot of emphasis on wins and losses. Go out there and give me what you can, put 100 percent into the way you play the game, and the wins and losses will take care of themselves.

"If you play as well as you can possibly play, and you get beat, so be it. But to come out and play the way we did — I thought we were past that."

UW-Oshkosh got on the board at the 18:05 mark as Sam Henke took a pass from Mamadee Konnah and beat SMU goalkeeper Bob Endemann (Woodridge, Ill.). The Titans added an insurance goal before the half ended as Mark Foster tapped in Ryan Stone's crossing pass at the 44:59 mark.

"I wouldn't say that that (second) goal was a back-breaker or anything like that," Luzzi said. "Sure, to give up a goal with one second left in the half hurts, but we certainly didn't feel like we were out of the game in any way."

SMU struggled to get anything going offensively, managing just four shots on goal — two in each half. Oshkosh, meanwhile, finished with seven shots on goal.

"I don't know what the problem is right now, but we seem to really struggle to get up for nonconference games," said Luzzi, whose team fell to 4-5-2 overall — with just one of their four wins coming in a nonconference game. "We just did not play with a lot of energy, which is a little disheartening, considering we haven't played in over a week.

"I wish I had some answers — I've got a lot of questions, now I've got to figure out the answers."

• THIS AND THAT: SMU has outscored its opponents 11-4 in its four wins, and the Cardinals have been outscored 14-3 in their five losses. … SMU goalkeeper Bob Endemann (Woodridge, Ill.) extended his consecutive minutes played streak to 10:47:11 — every minute of all 11 SMU games. … Endemann boasts a 1.63 goals-against-average and a .753 save percentage. … Mike Boland (Lake Zurich, Ill.) is the Cardinals' leader in goals (9) and points (19), while Brian Reddish (Crystal Lake, Ill.) leads the team in assists (4). … Three of SMU's four wins have come at home. … SMU is just 1-4-1 in nonconference play — and the Cardinals' two games this week are both nonconference (Friday at Rockford and Sunday at Benedictine). … The Cardinals have outscored their opponents 9-6 in the first half, but have been outscored 12-6 in the second.
