Adam Fingerhut accounted for both SMU goals, but the Cardinals could not dig out of a 3-0 second-period hole in falling to the Foresters 4-2 in last year's nonconference meeting. … The Cardinals opened the season with a pair of heartbreaking losses, rallying from 2-0 first-period deficits against both UW-Stevens Point and UW-Eau Claire, only to come up on the short end of 5-3 and 6-5 decisions, respectively. … Lake Forest, meanwhile, split its first two games against MIAC opponents last weekend, losing to Saint John’s 8-5 and beating Augsburg 6-2.

The Foresters have split their first two weekend series. … The Foresters, who return 19 letterwinners off last year’s fourth-place NCHA team, was tabbed seventh in the NCHA preseason coach’s poll. … Lake Forest lost assists leader Mike Kneeland (25), but do return Tyler Canel, who collected 14 goals and added 17 assists for 31 points. Canel has already dished out five assists this year and shares the team points lead (5) with Brian Lee. … Lake Forest has allowed 17 goals in its two losses (9-0 vs. MSOE and 8-5 vs. Saint John’s), while surrendering just five in wins over MSOE (4-3) and Augsburg (6-2). … Forester coach Tony Fritz begins his 28th year in the league and currently has 318 career wins.
