Tommies record 5-0 shutout of Cardinals to complete series sweep

ST. PAUL, Minn. — In golf, it's called a mulligan — a chance for a golfer to take a shot over when his initial shot didn't go quite they way he had hoped,.

The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team would like to take a mulligan — make that two — following their performance Friday and Saturday against league-leading St. Thomas.

The Tommies, who handed SMU a 6-1 setback on the Cardinals' home ice on Friday, completed the sweep Saturday, getting scoring from five different players en route to a 5-0 victory.

"St. Thomas played extremely well," said SMU coach Don Olson, whose team has now lost two straight games for the first time this season. "I thought we worked hard, and created some good scoring opportunities — especially in the third period — we just couldn't put the puck in the net."

The two teams skated to a scoreless tie through the game's first 20 minutes, but the Tommies erupted for three unanswered goals in the second period, then added two more third-period goals to ice the win.

"We still haven't been able to regain our form from before the (Christmas) break," said Olson, whose team won nine of its first 12 games, but has gone just 1-2-1 since returning from the holiday break. "It's disappointing to lose back-to-back games to a rival like St. Thomas, but what's more disappointing is the fact that we didn't play the way we are capable of playing — we didn't rise to the challenge."
