Cardinal JV team edges Augsburg to claim tourney title
WINONA, Minn. It was the perfect ending to a near-perfect season for the Saint Mary's University men's junior varsity hockey team.
Bill Flynn (St. Louis, Mo.) scored the game's only goal midway through the second period and Curtis Nosal (Omaha, Neb.) stopped all 29 shots he faced as the Cardinals beat Augsburg 1-0 to win the Augsburg Cup Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals, who opened the tournament the junior varsity equivalent to the MIAC post-season tournament with a 3-2 overtime win over St. John's on Saturday, concluded their season with an impressive 9-2-1 overall record.
SMU earned its spot in the tournament's title game thanks in part to Dan Gelderman's (White Bear Lake, Minn.) goal two minutes into overtime as the Cardinals slipped past St. John's 3-2.
"These guys deserved to win (the tournament)," said SMU co-head junior varsity coach Terry Mannor. "They've worked hard all season, with winning (the Augsburg Cup) as one of their main goals.
"They played extremely well as weekend all season for that matter and to win a second straight tournament title is great."
In the semifinals, St. John's jumped out to a 1-0 first-period led, but the Cardinals responded with back-to-back goals by Jeff Westphal (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Flynn to take a 2-1 lead early in the third period. Peter Allen got the Johnnies even with five minutes remaining in regulation, setting the stage for Gelderman's overtime heroics.
In the championship game, goaltending was the order of the day, and Nosal outshined the Auggies David Nash. The SMU freshman stopped all 29 shots he faced, while Flynn's second-period tally was the only one of 28 SMU shots to get past Nash.
"It was a great (championship game)," said Mannor, whose team was unbeaten in five meetings with the Auggies (4-0-1) with three of the games being decided by one goal or less. "We knew we were going to be in for a battle. Everyone did a great job."
Flynn finished the season as the Cardinals' leading scorer, tallying 12 goals and eight assists for 20 points.
