Cardinals' break out of 4-game slide with 71-53 win over Hamline

WINONA, Minn. — Nick Michaels (Dyer, Ind.) posted his second double-double of the season and the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 71-53 win over Hamline Wednesday evening at the SMU Gym.

Michaels scored a game-high 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the Cardinals avenged an 86-78 Hamline victory in the two teams' first meeting on Jan. 10.

The Cardinals shot 40 percent from the field in the first half en route to a 36-29 halftime advantage, then pushed the margin to 13, 45-32 with a 9-3 run to open the second half. Hamline cut the lead to five, 45-40, but the Cardinals responded with an 18-7 run over the next six minutes to put the game out of reach.

Jeff Campbell and John Simonsen each scored 15 points for Hamline (2-14 MIAC, 2-18) overall, while Jim Miller chipped in 10 points.

Michaels was the only scorer in double figures for the Cardinals (3-13, 4-16), but Andy Bohnker (Story City, Iowa) tallied nine points, while Dusty Ward (Lakeville, Minn.) added eight points.
