Terrence Smith (Broadview, Ill.) recorded his first double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and adding 10 rebounds, but it was not enough as UW-Eau Claire dropped SMU 76-66 in the opening round of the UW-EC Tournament a year ago. … The Cardinals officially opened their season Friday night, falling to defending NCAA Division II national champion Winona State 98-54. … The Blugolds, meanwhile, are coming off a 1-1 performance at the Manchester Tournament last weekend. UW-Eau Claire opened with a 69-61 win over Alma (Mich.), before falling to host Manchester, 68-59.

With Friday’s setback vs. Winona State, the Cardinals have now lost eight straight season openers, dating back to a 78-71 win over Iowa Wesleyan to kick off the 1998-99 season. … SMU’s loss to Winona State was also its 19th straight vs. the Warriors. The Cardinals’ last win vs. WSU was a 55-46 triumph in 1986. … WSU’s 98 points were the most allowed by the Cardinals since Regis (Colo.) beat SMU 98-64 during the 2002-2003 season. … Brensley Haywood (Joliet, Ill.) netted a team-high 14 points vs. the Warriors. Haywood was the lone Cardinal in double figures vs. WSU. … SMU's game vs. Northern Illinolis last Wednesday marked the first time Saint Mary’s has faced an NCAA Division I team since the 1985-86 season, when the Cardinals traveled to California to take on the University of San Francisco and Saint Mary’s College. SMU lost to USF 80-60 and to SMC 82-62. … The Cardinals' nine wins last season were the most in a season since SMU went 11-13 during the 1999-2000 season. … Seven of the Cardinals' nine wins last season came on their home floor. The Cardinals finished the season with a 2-12 record on the road. … Terrence Smith (Broadview, Ill.) scored 10 or more points in 19 of the Cardinals’ 25 games. … The Cardinals scored 80 or more points five times a year ago, including a season-high 87 points in an 87-87-81 win over Northland on Dec. 30. … SMU was also held under 50 points three times — twice vs. Gustavus, in which the Cardinals lost 78-42 and 82-42.

UW-Eau Claire was impressive in its season-opening win over Alma (Mich.) last Friday, as the Blugolds got a team-high 15 points from Dan Beyer and a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds from Matt Riley. … UW-Eau Claire appeared poised for win No. 2 vs. Manchester, leading by 13 at the half, only to be outscored 43-21 in the second half of its loss to Manchester. … The Blugolds win over Alma was its sixth win in their last seven season openers. … The Blugolds return all five starters from last year’s 12-14 squad. … Riley has been the Blugolds’ leading scorer this season, averaging 16.5 ppg, while Jared Bardon (13.5 ppg) and Beyer (11.0 ppg) are also averaging in double figures. … The Blugolds shot 44 percent from the field in their two games at the Manchester Tournament, while also knocking down 32 of 48 free throws.
