Cardinal In The Spotlight

Walt Ayotte

After 37 years, Walt Ayotte stepped down as “SMU’s keeper of the clock” this season. Today, we honor Walt for his support and dedication to Saint Mary’s athletics.
A word from Walt Ayotte: “To be actively involved in the sport I love kept me young. Year-in and year-out, I enjoyed watching young men and women student-athletes mature. I had the opportunity to meet and get to know hundreds of coaches and referees. As a result, I feel I am a better person because of my experiences with the student-athletes, coaches, and officials. I savored the victories and shared in the agony of defeat. Deciding to turn the clock over to someone else was a difficult decision. One coach told me, ‘We don’t lose games. We just run out of time.’ I didn’t lose any games. I just ran out of time.”
