29-point efforts not enough as Cardinals' perfect MIAC start comes to halt with 70-58 loss to Cobbers
Twenty-nine points in the second half, however, wasn't nearly enough as the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team saw its two-game winning streak come to a screeching halt with a 70-58 loss to Concordia. "We didn't play exceptionally well in the first half, but we did enough defensively to keep us in the game," said SMU coach Mike Trewick, whose team had opened up MIAC play 2-0 for the first time in more than 20 years thanks in part to last Monday's 69-64 victory over Macalester. "We just weren't able to come up with enough offense (in the seocnd half) to keep up. "Concordia is a very good team they're talented and physical and they wore us down." The Cardinals broke free from the Cobbers late in the first half, holding a nine-point, 25-16 advantage with less than five minutes remaining, but the Cobbers came storming back, using a 13-4 half-ending run to knot the game at 29-29 at the intermission. SMU, which hit 10 of 25 shots in the first half, nearly duplicated that effort in the second half, knocking down 10 more field goals on 23 shots en route to their second straight 29-point effort. Concordia, however, took advantage of a 15-6 advantage in made free throws in netting 41 points in the game's final 20 minutes to seal the win. Michael Batterman (Fond du Lac, Wis.) led the way for SMU (2-1 MIAC, 3-3), scoring 12 points, while John Scurlock (Chicago, Ill.) and Fiore Buccieri (Riverside, Ill.) also finished in double figures, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively. "It's a disappointing loss," admitted Trewick, whose team is now off until Dec. 28-29, when the Cardinals travel to Eau Claire, Wis., to take part in the UW-Eau Claire Tournament. "But it's also been a very positive start to the season. We've done a lot of good things, and, hopefully, we can pick up right where we've left off when we return from break." |
