WINONA, Minn. On Wednesday, the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team seemed to finally find its shooting touch, as the Cardinals shot nearly 50 percent from the field en route to an impressive 61-49 victory over Augsburg.
Saturday afternoon, they lost it again.
And Macalester found it.
The Cardinals shot just 36 percent from the field in the first half, fell behind 46-27 at halftime and never recorded as the Scots fueled by a 53 percent performance from the field and a 12-for-18 effort from behind the 3-point line cruised to an 80-56 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at the SMU Gym.
We let them do what they wanted, offensively, said SMU coach Mike Trewick, whose team went on a 9-0 run early in the second half to cut the lead to 10, but could not get any closer in falling to 3-10 in the MIAC and 4-14 overall. When you don't defend, you don't win games.
"We didnt defend and we didnt execute."
Michael Rohr (Bloomingdale, Ill.) who scored career highs in each of his last two games, netting 19 in a loss to Concordia last Sunday and tallying 20 in SMU's triumph over Augsburg once again led the Cardinals in scoring, dropping in 16 points.
Problem was, the SMU freshman was the Cardinals' only player in double figures.
Brad Liddell led a quartet of Scots in double figures, netting a game-high 20. Erik Jackson chipped in 15 and Brendan Bosman and Will Moeller each tallied 10.
"We did not play well, plain and simple," Trewick said. "Macalester is a physical team and we didn't step up and play tough against them."
