CHICAGO, Ill. Offensively, Day 2 was a bit better than Day 1 for the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team.
SMU managed just 50 points in its season-opening, 67-50 loss to host University of Chicago last Friday during the opening round of the University of Chicago Tournament.
Saturday in the consolation game, the Cardinals' offense turned up the heat a notch or two, getting 19 points from Jeff Tendall (LeClaire, Iowa) and 14 from Dan Kloak (Elmwood, Ill.) en route to a 61-point effort against Southwestern.
Problem was, the Southwestern's offense was a bit better, too, scoring 72 points including 41 in the second half in handing SMU its second straight setback, 72-61.
The Cardinals shot just 33 percent from the field, making just 19 of their 56 field goals including an 8 of 24 performance from the 3-point line while Southwestern shot 45 percent from the field, and took advantage of 26 SMU fouls, converting on 23 of 40 free-throw attempts.
Tendall and Kloak were the lone SMU players in double figures, while Southwestern (1-1 overall) got a game-high 25 points from Aaron Bowser and 16 from Robert Cates.
