Struggles from the free throw line costly as Cardinals fall to Colorado College
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. The Saint Mary's University men's basketball team's swing through Colorado ended the same way it began Friday evening as Colorado College built a 10-point halftime lead and never looked back in handing the Cardinals a 74-66 nonconference setback.
The Cardinals, who were manhandled by Regis 98-64 the night before, have now dropped five straight, dating back to an 83-70 win over Hamline on Dec. 4.
Unlike Thursday's loss to Regis, it wasn't ice-cold shooting from the field that did SMU in it was ice-cold shooting from the free throw line against the Tigers.
SMU made just 11 of 22 free throw attempts, while Colorado College converted on 21 of 31 attempts.
Nick Michaels (Dyer, Ind.) led four SMU players in double figures, scoring 16 points and adding a team-high six rebounds. Todd Yankowski (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in 12 points, while Lance Larson (Lakeville, Minn.) and Ryan Wilt (Naperville, Ill.) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Matt Bahl scored a game-high 28 points for Colorado College.
