Cardinals' turnovers prove costly as Carleton rolls to 76-55 victory

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — For the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team, every possession is precious. The Cardinals can't afford to pass up any potential scoring opportunities.

Yet, Wednesday evening, that's exactly what the Cardinals did.

Carleton took advantage of 17 SMU turnovers — turning them into 21 points — as the Knights cruised to a 76-55 win over the Cardinals, handing SMU its 11th straight loss.

Anthony Baquero led five Carleton players in double figures, as the Knights won for the second straight time. Todd Yankowski (Chicago, Ill.) and Jim Wangler (Wheaton, Ill.), meanwhile, finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively to lead the way for SMU (2-13 MIAC, 2-18 overall).

Carleton shot 50 percent from the field in jumping out to an eight-point, 37-29 halftime advantage. SMU, which shot 44 percent in the first half, struggled to find its touch in the second half, hitting just 11 of 33 attempts (33 percent) — including just 1 of 11 from beyond the 3-point line.
