Same course, not-so-same results as SMU struggles at Augsburg

COTTAGE GROVE, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's golf team opened its season with an impressive 307 team score in a dual-meet victory over Macalester at Mississippi Dunes Golf Course.

A week later, the Cardinals were back on the Mississippi Dunes Golf Course for the Augsburg Invitational.

Same course, but — unfortunately for SMU — not-so-same results.

"I don't know what happened, we played so well (at Mississippi Dunes) last week, but we really struggled this weekend," said SMU coach Tom Farren, whose team shot a 325-325—650 in the two-day tournament. "We just did not play well at all."

Scott Savage (Mahtomedi, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, putting together rounds of 81-78 for a 159 total. Josh Wendel (Rosemount, Minn.) added a 79-82—161, followed by Bill Ryan (Western Springs, Ill. / 84-83—167), Jesse Polk (Hastings, Minn. / 87-82—169) and Mike Dvorak (Litchfield, Minn. / 81-92—173).

"The weather conditions were tough, but that's no excuse — everyone was in the same boat," said Farren. "It was just one of those weekends."
