With MIAC Championships on the horizon, Cardinals get back on right track with 4th-place effort at Carleton
Just a week before the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, the Saint Mary's University men's golf team finally showed their true colors, turning in two of their best rounds of the season en route to a fourth-place finish in the 11-team Carleton/St. Olaf Invitational. "This was a good weekend for us,' said SMU coach Tom Farren, whose Cardinals' 310 first-day effort was just a shot off their season-best effort, accomplished during a season-opening dual-meet win over Macalester. "The guys put together two pretty solid rounds, and that's what we need heading into next weekend." Scott Savage (Mahtomedi, Minn.) led the Cardinals' charge, carding a season-best, one-over-par 73 during Saturday's opening round, and followed that up with a 79 on Sunday for a 152 total. Josh Wendel (Rosemount, Minn.) added rounds of 79-80159, followed by Jesse Polk (Hastings, Minn. / 81-79160), Tony Hynes (Lino Lakes, Minn. / 85-76161) and Bill Ryan (Western Springs, Ill. / 77-85162). "We knew this was an important tournament for us," Farren said. "The guys have been working hard on their games, and, hopefully, this is a sign of good things to come." |
