Cardinals make most of final MIAC tune-up, placing 7th at WSU
WINONA, Minn. Andrea Hanke (Janesville, Wis.) and the rest of the Saint Mary's University women's golf team need a solid performance heading into next weekend's MIAC Championships.
And solid is just what they got.
Hanke carded a season-best nine-over-par 81 in leading SMU to a seventh-place finish in the four-team Winona State Invitational Friday afternoon.
"We needed a solid performance (Friday) in our last meet before the MIAC Championships and we got just that," said SMU coach Dan Messmann. "It was great to see Andrea have a breakout score, and the rest of the team seemed to follow suit. It was a good day all around."
Good? For some of the Cardinals, it was the best of the season.
Caty Beel (Tucson, Ariz.) posted an 88 by far her best effort of the season while Val Meschke (Pine River, Minn.) added an 89, followed by Katie O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill. / 92) and Elise Slaby (Willowbrook, Ill. / 96).
"This was the perfect tune-up for us," said Messmann. "We played very well today, and, hopefully, we can put together a couple rounds just like it next weekend (at the MIAC Championships)."
