Cardinal women set 36-hole school record at Winona State Invite
HAYFIELD, Minn. The Saint Mary's University women's golf team found out what it's like to be the little fish in the big pond Friday afternoon, as the Cardinals took part in the five-team Winona State University Fall Invitational.
And the Cardinals certainly held their own.
Fueled by Andrea Hanke's (Janesville, Wis.) rounds of 83-89172, the Cardinals posted a school-record 36-hole total of 725 to place fourth overall.
"I was very proud of the way our team played," said SMU coach Dan Messmann, noting that the Cardinals were the lone NCAA Division III school in the five-team field. "There were four very good Division II schools there, and I thought we did a pretty good job of holding our own.
"The course conditions (wet and windy) were pretty tough and add to that the fact that we played 36 holes in one day and I'm very pleased," continued Messmann. "We've been working very hard on our games this fall, and it's starting to pay off."
Valerie Meschke (Pine River, Minn.) chipped in a 93-85178 for SMU, while Katie O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill. / 89-90179), Caty Beel (Tucson, Ariz. / 99-97196) and Angela Nelson (White Bear Lake, Minn. / 117-120237) rounded out the Cardinals' top five.
