Cardinals can't shake off 10 days of rust in placing 11th at Luther
DECORAH, Iowa The Saint Mary's University women's golf team stepped on the first tee at the Oneota Golf and Country Club Monday afternoon having not played competitively in 10 days.
And it showed.
The Cardinals managed just one round in the 80s a team-best 89 by Katie O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill.) and slumped to an 11th-place finish at the Luther Invitational.
"It wasn't one of our better days," said SMU coach Dan Messmann. "We looked a little rusty out there, but I guess that's to be expected when you don't compete for a long stretch of time like that."
Andrea Hanke (Janesville, Wis.) chipped in a 90 for the Cardinals, while Va. Meschke (Pine River, Minn.) added a 91 and Caty Beel (Tucson, Ariz.) finished with a 101.
"Despite the scores, we did a lot of good things out on the course to show that we are getting closer to really putting it all together," said Messmann. "With continued hard work, we should be able to put ourselves in good position to peak at the conference tournament."
