Hanke leads Cardinals' charge as SMU takes 13th at UW-EC invite
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. Andrea Hanke (Janesville, Wis.) has been the leader of the Saint Mary's University women's golf team for the past three years.
And if her performance at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational is any indication, she will be the Cardinals' leader once again this season.
Hanke carded rounds of 86-82 to lead the Cardinals to a 13th-place effort in the team's season-opening tournament of the season.
"It was a good weekend for us," said SMU coach Dan Messmann. "We did a lot of good things on the course and everyone really competed all weekend.
"I think everyone was a bit nervous during the first day," continued Messmann. "But we calmed down a bit (in Sunday's second round) and came away with a respectable ninth-place finish."
Val Meschke (Pine River, Minn.) chipped in a 93-92185 for the Cardinals, while Caty Beel (Tuscon, Ariz. / 95-92187), Katie O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill. / 90-97187) and Elise Slaby (Willowbrook, Ill. / 101-101202) rounded out SMU's top five.
"It was a good start for us," said Messmann. "We showed a lot of promise out there."
