women's teams get seasons off on the right foot
WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's golf coach Tom Farren had high hopes heading into the 2005 season.
Sunday afternoon, Macalester learned why.
The Cardinals shattered their 18-hole team record, firing a 298 total to beat the Scots 298-321 in a dual meet at the Cedar Valley Golf Course.
"I knew we were capable of putting together some good numbers," said Farren, whose team had never put together a team score below 300 in his eight years at the Cardinals' head coach. "We've got a real nice mix of veterans and newcomers, and (Sunday) we showed just how good we can be when we play up to our ability."
Jesse Polk (Hastings, Minn.) — the Cardinals' reigning All-MIAC selection — led the way against the Scots, carding a one-over-par 73. Polk had a pair of birdies and three bogeys in going out in 37, before firing an even-par 36 on the back nine to win medalist honors. Kyle Roark (Waterloo, Iowa) was a shot back of Polk, shooting 74, while Curtis Nosal (Omaha, Neb.) and Scott Savage (Mahtomedi, Minn.) added rounds of 75 and 76, respectively. Justin Magill (Lake Elmo, Minn.) rounded out the Cardinals' top five, settling for an 82.
Eric Kelsey led the way for Macalester, shooting 77.
"This was a great way for us to kick off the season," understated Farren, whose team is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Winona State for a one-day dual, before heading off to the St. Thomas Invitational on Sunday and Monday. "It's exciting to see just what this team is capable of doing — hopefully this is just a small sign of things to come for this group."
ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE, Andrea Hanke (Janesville, Wis.) has been the leader of the SMU women's golf team for the past three years.
And if her performance at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational is any indication, she will be the Cardinals' leader once again this season.
Hanke carded rounds of 86-82 to lead the Cardinals to a 13th-place effort in the team's season-opening tournament of the season.
"It was a good weekend for us," said SMU coach Dan Messmann. "We did a lot of good things on the course and everyone really competed all weekend.
"I think everyone was a bit nervous during the first day," continued Messmann. "But we calmed down a bit (in Sunday's second round) and played much more like we are capable of playing."
Val Meschke (Pine River, Minn.) chipped in a 93-92—185 for the Cardinals, while Caty Beel (Tuscon, Ariz. / 95-92—187), Katie O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill. / 90-97—187) and Elise Slaby (Willowbrook, Ill. / 101-101—202) rounded out SMU's top five.
"It was a good start for us," said Messmann. "We showed a lot of promise out there."
