Being little fish in big pond can't slow SMU women;
No repeat performance as Cardinal men fall to WSU

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's golf team found out what it's like to be the little fish in the big pond last Friday, as the Cardinals took part in the five-team Winona State University Fall Invitational.

And the "little" Cardinals certainly held their own.

Fueled by Andrea Hanke's (Janesville, Wis.) rounds of 83-89—172, the Cardinals posted a school-record 36-hole total of 725 to place fourth overall.

"I was very proud of the way our team played," said SMU coach Dan Messmann, noting that the Cardinals were the lone NCAA Division III school in the five-team field. "There were four very good Division II schools there, and I thought we did a pretty good job of holding our own.

"The course conditions (wet and windy) were pretty tough — and add to that the fact that we played 36 holes in one day — and I'm very pleased," continued Messmann. "We've been working very hard on our games this fall, and it's starting to pay off."

Valerie Meschke (Pine River, Minn.) chipped in a 93-85—178 for SMU, while Katie O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill. / 89-90—179), Caty Beel (Tucson, Ariz. / 99-97—196) and Angela Nelson (White Bear Lake, Minn. / 117-120—237) rounded out the Cardinals' top five.

THE SMU MEN'S GOLF TEAM, MEANWHILE, learned first-hand just how difficult it is to turn in back-to-back recording-setting performances.

The Cardinals, fresh off a school-record score of 298 in their season-opening, dual-meet win over Macalester, could not come up with a repeat performance last Saturday against Winona State, as SMU posted a 323 total in the dual-meet loss.

"It's tough to be overly disappointed, because even a score of 323 isn't all that bad," said SMU coach Tom Farren. "It's just when you start the way we did (against Macalester), your expectations are to put up numbers like that every time.

"The (Winona) Country Club is a tough course, especially when you don't play it that much," continued Farren. "Obviously, I would have liked to have seen our scores a bit lower, but it's still early in the year."

Jesse Polk (Hastings, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, carding a 79, while Bill Ryan (Western Springs, Ill.) was a shot back at 80. Scott Savage (Mahtomedi, Minn.) added an 81, with Kyle Roark (Waterloo, Iowa) and Curtis Nosal (Omaha, Neb.) each adding 83.

"It's nice to have the depth that we do," said Farren, noting that SMU extras Justin Magill (Lake Elmo, Minn.) and Josh Wendel (Rosemount, Minn.) carded rounds of 79 and 81, respectively. "We've got at least eight players who are capable of putting together rounds in the 70s, which means there's going to be a lot of competition for those fourth and fifth spots."
