Cardinals settle for sixth-place showing in first spring meet of season

WINONA, Minn. — With less than a week to prepare, the Saint Mary's University women's golf team kicked off its spring season Saturday and Sunday, placing sixth at the Winona State University Invitational at Cedar Valley Golf Course.

"Overall, I was pretty happy with the way we played," said SMU coach Dan Messmann, whose team opened with a 364, before coming back with a second-day 362. "Considering the fact that, thanks to Mother Nature, we haven't had much time outside, I thought we did pretty well."

Andrea Hanke (Janesville, WIs.) led the way for the Cardinals, shooting rounds of 85-83 for a 168 total and a 17th-place overall finish. Katie O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill.) chipped in a 95-91—186, while Dani Lynch (Williston, N.D.) was a shot back at 87-100—187. Caty Beel (Tucson, Ariz.) and Kristi Pugal (Brookfield, Wis.) rounded out SMU's top five, shooting 97-93—190 and 108-95—203, respectively.
