Hanke, Cardinals turn in record-setting performances at Luther Invite

DECORAH, Iowa — Thirteen teams, 86 golfers — and not one was better than Saint Mary's University's Andrea Hanke (Janesville, Wis.).

Hanke set an individual school record, carding a two-over-par 74 to earn medalist honors at the one-day, Luther Invitational Monday afternoon.

"Andrea was awesome — she played the best golf of her (collegiate career) against a very good field," said SMU coach Dan Messmann, whose women's team placed sixth in the 13-team field wtih a single-day school record score of 348, just 25 shots back of champion Wartburg. "Andrea has played well in our first two tournaments, but she took her game to another level."

As did the rest of the Cardinals.

"This was a great step forward for us," said Messmann. "There were a lot of solid teams in this tournament, and for us to go out and put up a score like that is great."

Hanke, who struggled to a 19-over-par 91 on the same course in last year's event, fired a one-under-par 35 on the opening nine Monday, and came back with a 39 on the back nine to win the tournament by two shots over Wartburg's Erin Dohlman.

Katelyn O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill.) chipped in a 90 (44-46), while Katie Omdahl (Algona, Iowa / 45-46—91), Dani Lynch (Williston, N.D. / 49-44—93), Caty Beel (Tucson, Ariz. / 49-46—95) and Kristi Pugal (Brookfield, Wis. / 51-46—97) rounded out the SMU golfers.
