Cardinals get three scores in the 80s en route to second-place finish
NORTHFIELD, Minn. It was supposed to be a two-day event one of three that the Saint Mary's University women's golf team would compete in during the spring season.
Mother Nature, however, had other ideas.
Thanks to constant rain, the tournament was shortened to 18 holes and the Cardinals made the most of each and every one.
Getting three players to shoot in the 80s, SMU placed second in the four-team field, shooting a 360, three strokes back of Augsburg and well in front of both St. Olaf and Macalester.
"It turned into a pretty crazy weekend," said SMU coach Dan Messmann, whose team actually got nine holes in on Saturday before play was halted. "Some teams hadn't even played more than one hole (Saturday), so they decided to split the field into two separate tournaments.
"I was very happy with the way we played," continued Messmann. "To get three players to shoot in the 80s was great, and to be right behind Augsburg and ahead of St. Olaf and Macalester was nice to see."
Caty Beel (Tucson, Ariz.) led the way for the Cardinals, shooting an 88, while Andrea Hanke (Janesville, Wis.) and Katie O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill.) chipped in 89s. Kristi Pugal (Brookfield, WIs.) and Katie Omdahl (Algona, Iowa) rounded out the Cardinals' top five with a 94 and a 106, respectively.
