Cardinal golfers settle for 12th-place finishes in spring season finales
WINONA, Minn. After watching his team card rounds of 308 and 317 at the St. John's Invitational Sunday, Saint Mary's University men's golf coach Tom Farren didn't want the spring season to end.
After watching his team struggle to rounds of 403 and 400, SMU women's coach Dan Messmann couldn't wait for the Sunday's spring finale to end.
"We've had such a good spring, it's unfortunate that it had to end like this we just did not play well at all," said Messmann, whose team placed 12th overall. "It was just one of those weekends where we couldn't do anything right. It was a struggle from start to finish."
There wasn't much struggling for the SMU men, whose opening-round 308 was the sixth-best round by the 11 MIAC schools competing in the 18-team tournament. SMU slipped a bit in its second round to finish 12th overall, but the Cardinals' performance certainly left Farren hungry for more.
"We played well especially in that first round," said Farren. "We got great performances from our 3-4-5 guys, which is something we weren't getting during the (fall) season.
"Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come."
Jesse Polk (Hastings, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, carding rounds of 76-78154, while Kyle Roark (Waterloo, Iowa) and Curtis Nosal (Omaha, Neb.) were a shot back after shooting 76-79155 and 78-77155, respectively. Mark Miller (Winona, Minn.) chipped in a 78-82160, followed by Scott Savage (Mahtomedi, Minn. / 80-87167).
Andrea Hanke (Janesville, Wis.) was the top finisher for the SMU women, shooting 86-92178. Katie O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill.) added a 106-92198, followed by Caty Beel (Tucson, Ariz. / 106-104210) and Dani Lynch (Williston, N.D. / 105-112217).
