Cardinals struggle to 13th-place finish at St. John's Invitational
ST. CLOUD, Minn. They were all there Saint Mary's, Gustavus, St. John's, Augsburg, Carleton, St. Olaf, Bethel and Macalester.
The St. John's Invitational men's golf tournament might as well change its name to the MIAC Championships Preview.
And if Sunday and Monday's final results were any indication, the SMU men's golf team still has a ways to go if they hope to leap into the upper tier when the real MIAC Championships take place in early October.
The Cardinals failed to register a round in the 70s during Sunday's opening round, getting a team-low 11-over-par 83 from Scott Savage (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and an 84 from Kyle Roark (Waterloo, Iowa) and were sitting in 10th place in the 17-team field.
And things didn't go much better on Monday, as SMU managed just one score below 80 a five-over 77 from Jesse Polk (Hastings, Minn.) in struggling to a 13th-place finish.
Savage equaled his Day 1 score with a second straight 83 to lead SMU with a 166 total. Polk rebounded from his opening-day 95 with that team-low 77 for a 172 total. Roark tallied a second-day 92 for a 176, while Mark Miller (Winona, Minn. / 87-89176) and Curtis Nosal (Omaha, Neb. / 87-91178) rounded out the SMU lineup.
