Polk is SMU men's silver lining at MIAC Championships
WINONA, Minn. All coach Tom Farren wanted from his Saint Mary's University men's golf team at the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships was consistency.
Unfortunately for Farren, that's what he got it just wasn't consistently good.
Except, of course, for the play of freshman Jesse Polk (Hastings, Minn.).
Polk followed up an opening-round 76 with a three-over-par 75 on Sunday to post a seven-over 151 total and earn All-MIAC honors for his third-place individual finish.
"I'm so happy for Jesse, he put together two outstanding rounds," said Farren of his first-ever all-conference performer. "Jesse has played well all season, and it was nice to see him save his best two rounds for when they counted most."
That, however, was the silver lining for the Cardinals, who, aside from Polk, managed just one round in the 70s in struggling to an eighth-place finish.
Scott Savage (Mahtomedi, Minn.), who opened with an 82, was two shots better on the second day with an eight-over 80 for a 162 total, while Curtis Nosal (Omaha, Neb.) struggled to match his opening-round 77, slipping to a second-day 89 and a 166 total. Kyle Roark (Waterloo, Iowa) rounded out the Cardinals' top four, firing back-to-back 84s.
"Overall, as a team, we just did not play, which is disappointing," said Farren. "I really felt that, after the way we had been playing the last couple of weeks, this was going to be our year to really make a run.
"We just didn't play up to our capabilities as a team, which is unfortunate."
