Solid individual performances highlight weekend for SMU
WINONA, Minn. In terms of overall team finishes, the Saint Mary's University men's golf teams placed third and fourth in the Cardinals' two-day, double-dual against cross-town rival Winona State.
In terms of individual performances, however, the Cardinals turned in some impressive performances.
Scott Savage (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Jesse Polk (Hastings, Minn.) each fired 10-over-par 152s to place fourth overall, just five shots back of tournament champion Troy Merritt of Winona State.
Savage carded the Cardinals' best round of the tournament, shooting a four-over-part 75 at the Winona Country Club. The SMU sophomore added a second-round 77 to finish at 152. Polk, playing in his first collegiate meet, matched Savage's final 152 total, carding back-to-back 76s in leading the SMU Red team to a third-place score of 628.
"We played great if we can post those scores consistently, we'll be in the top three in the conference," said SMU coach Tom Farren. "To get scores like that on probably the toughest course we'll play on all year, that's great.
"I was very impressed by Scott and Jesse," Farren continued. "Those are all-conference caliber scores."
Curtis Nosal (Omaha, Neb.), Kyle Roark (Waterloo, Iowa) and Mark Miller (Winona, Minn.) rounded out SMU's top five finishers, placing 13-14-15, respectively, with scores of 162 (79-83), 163 (82-81) and 165 (81-84).
"I'm very optimistic a lot more optimistic than I was a month ago," Farren said. "If we can continue to play like we did this weekend, we'll be a force (at the MIAC tournament)."
It was much of the same for the Cardinal women last weekend.
The scores were a shade higher, but, fortunately for Andrea Hanke (Janesville, Minn.) and the Cardinals, so were the place finish.
Just a week after firing rounds of 82-81163 to finish fourth at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational, Hanke nailed her second straight 81 of the year to go with a second-round 88 en route to a 169 total at the Gustavus Invitational.
A 169 that earned her a third-place finish and helped the Saint Mary's University women's golf team to a third-place finish.
"It was another solid weekend for Andrea," said SMU coach Dan Messmann. "It's nice to see her put together another consistent tournament, especially in very tough, windy conditions.
"She's proving that she belongs among the elite of the MIAC."
Hanke didn't do it alone, however.
Kristi Pugal (Brookfield, WIs.) chipped in a 181 total (92-89), while Ashley Fosmo (Plainview, Minn. / 96-100196), Katie O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill. / 102-94196), Caty Beel (Tucson, Ariz. / 96-106202) and Katie Omdahl (Algona, Iowa / 109-104213) rounded out the Cardinals' lineup.
"That was a career tournament for Kristi for her to go 92, 89 was great to see," said Messmann. "Overall, our performance was better than a week ago (at UW-Eau Claire), which was good to see.
"We're headed in the right direction."
