18th-place showing not quite final tune-up Cardinals
were looking for as they head into MIAC Championships

WINONA, Minn. — With one final tune-up before the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, Saint Mary's University men's golf coach Tom Farren was hoping to see his Cardinals put up some low numbers at the Twin Cities Classic.

And he got some, as the Cardinals put up four rounds in the 70s.

Unfortunately, that was four rounds in the 70s — out of a combined 15 rounds.

"We weren't very consistent this weekend," said Farren, whose men placed 18th in the 21-team field with a 977 three-day total. "We got a few pretty decent rounds, but not nearly enough. If we are going to make any type of move (at the MIAC Championships), we've got to get more rounds in the 70s and fewer in the mid- to upper-80s."

St. Cloud State won the three-day tournament with a 904 total, eding out St. John's by three shots. St. Thomas was third (911), followed by Central (915), UW-Eau Claire (918), Gustavus (920) and Nebraska Wesleyan (920). The Cardinals' 977 total put them sixth among the nine MIAC schools competing.

Scott Savage (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Jesse Polk (Hastings, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, accounting for all four sub-80 rounds. Savage opened with an 80, then followed that up with a 78 and a 77 for a team-best 235. Polk was a shot back after rounds of 77-79-80—236, while Curtis Nosal (Omaha, Neb. / 81-82-87—250) and Mark Miller (Winona, Minn. / 84-87-85—256) rounded out the top four.

"Scott and Jesse played pretty well," said Farren. "But after that, we were way too inconsistent. I was hoping we'd be able to put together a little better performance this weekend to give us some momentum heading into the conference championship."
