Johnston helps Cardinals climb to 10th in final standings at Gustie invite
JORDAN, Minn. Tom Johnston (Long Lake, Minn.) equaled the fourth lowest 18-hole score recorded Tuesday afternoon, helping the Saint Mary's University men's golf team jump up two places during the second day of the 54-hole Gustavus Invitational.
Johnston, who shot rounds of 77-81158 during Monday's opening 36 holes, added a three-over-par 75 for a team-leading total of 233. Johnston's effort helped SMU climb from 12th to 10th in the overall 14-team standings. Gustavus, the reigning Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions, won the event with a score of 880, 11 shots in front of runner-up UW-Eau Claire and 17 shots better than third-place St. John's. SMU finished with a 968 total, finishing ahead of MIAC schools Macalester, St. Olaf and Carleton.
Eric Thom (Portland, Ore.), who opened the tournament with a four-over-par 76 and followed that up with a six-over 76 during Monday's 36 holes on the par-72, 6,936-yard LeSueur Country Club layout, shot an 84 on Tuesday at The Ridges at Sand Creek to finish at 238.
SMU's other three golfers included: Scott Savage (Mahtomedi, Minn. / 83-80-86249), Mark Miller (Winona, Minn. / 85-84-83252) and Curtis Nosal (Omaha, Neb. / 94-85-82261).
This was the only spring tournament of the season for the Cardinals.
