Thom's 15-place finish leads the way as Cardinals take 7th at MIAC Championships

COON RAPIDS, Minn. — All season long, Saint Mary's University men's golf coach Tom Farren has been harping on his Cardinal golfers the importance of consistency.

And, while they certainly had some ups and downs along the way, the Cardinals appeared to be headed down the right path heading into the season-ending MIAC Championships.

In their penultimate event — the three-day Twin Cities Classic — the Cardinals fired five rounds in the 70s, and had only five strokes separate their No. 1 golfer from their No. 4.

It was that model of consistency that Farren had been preaching all fall.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals must have taken a wrong turn on their way to the Bunker Hills Golf Course, as SMU managed just two rounds in the 70s — both carded by Eric Thom (Portland, Ore.) en route to his 15-place finish overall — en route to a seventh-place finish in the 10-team field.

Kyle Sabot (Arden Hills, Minn.) finished with an 83-81—164 total, while Matt Konicek (Wauconda, Ill.) and Joe Monaldi (Valparaiso, Ind.) added scores of 82-86—168 and 81-88—169, respectively, and D.J. Schweitzer (Johnsburg, Ill.) recorded an 85-86—171.
