WINONA, Minn. —  Despite where his teams finished, Saint Mary's University cross country coach Ward Berndt isn't about to complain.

How could he, when his teams turned in some of their best times of the year.

Unfortunately, so did several other Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams.

"I'm pretty OK with the way the day went," said Berndt, whose women placed ninth in the 11-team field at last Saturday's MIAC Championships, while the men placed 11th out of 11. "We ran very well — probably better than we have all season, so it's pretty hard to be too upset.

"The problem was, we weren't the only team that turned in very solid performances. If our women's team ran like this last year, they would have been fifth … this year, they were ninth," said Berndt. "Everybody was that much better this year."

Tera Bollig (Cambridge, Minn.) led the way for the SMU women, placing 18th overall — and earning honorable-mention All-MIAC honors — with a time of 24:04. Alicia Hartung (Menomonie, Wis.) chipped in a time of 24:57 to place 43rd, followed by Kate Boisjolie (Austin, Minn. / 45th, 24:58), Ashley Davis (Hugo, Minn. / 48th, 25:02), Megan Wagner (Webster, Minn. / 60th, 25:24), Sarah Zweber (Elko, Minn. / 61st, 25:24) and Kim Koecheler (St. Paul, Minn. / 62nd, 25:28).

John Vallez (Eagan, Minn.) has been the SMU men's leader all season, and the MIAC Championships were no different, as the Cardinal freshman placed 26th with an 8K time of 27:24. Andy Accola (DeForest, Wis.) finished 62nd with a time of 29:14), while Jon Sopcak (Steamwood, Ill. / 69th, 30:07), Jerod Baertsch (Winona, Minn. / 74th, 30:50), Marty Howard (Chicago, Ill. / 75th, 31:04), Andrew Rath (Hillsborough, N.J. / 76th, 31:06) and Mike Marek (Winona, Minn. / 77th, 32:42) rounded out the Cardinals' top seven.

"We never have been too caught up with overall team finishes — our focus has been on individual improvement," said Berndt. "And we certainly showed improvement (Saturday)."
