Ellen Koranda leads Cardinal women to top spot among USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic teams
His Cardinals have proven to be very good jugglers. In fact, according to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), SMU's women's cross country team, their juggling act is the best in all of Division III. The USTFCCCA announced its 2005 Division III All-Academic Teams, and the SMU women were at the top of the list. "I'm very happy for my athletes, they've worked very hard, both in their training and in the classroom," said Berndt, whose team boasted a 3.744 GPA, edging out Whitworth (3.704) for the women's top spot. "As a program, we definitely stress the whole person we are constantly talking about living a healthy lifestyle, getting proper nutrition, sleep and balancing the academic, athletic and social life of an athlete. "Our team follows a pretty simple philosophy," continued Berndt. "What is good for you academically, is good for you athletically," The Cardinals were one of six Minnesota Intercollegiate Atheltic Conference women's teams including Carleton, Hamline, Saint Benedict, Macalester and St. Olaf to make the All-Academic list. St. Olaf and Saint John's were the MIAC's men's representatives. A whopping 157 female runners including the Cardinals' Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) boasted GPAs of 3.5 or higher and earned individual All-Academic honors. |
