WINONA, Minn. — Last Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships proved to be the unofficial passing of the torch for the Saint Mary's University women's cross country team.

Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) — who has been the Cardinals' top runner all season – was competing in her final conference meet, while freshman Sam Oreskovich (Prior Lake, Minn.) was competing in her first.

And the two finished less than a second apart — with the youngster edging out the veteran — to help guide the Cardinals to an eighth-place finish in the 12-team field.

Oreskovich turned in a career-best six-kilometer time of 24:39, placing 39th overall, while Koranda and Tera Bollig (Cambridge, Minn.) were right on her heels, stopping the clock in 24:40 and 24:46, respectively. Kate Boisjolie (Austin, Minn.) chipped in a time of 25:18, while Sarah Zweber (Elko, Minn. / 25:34), Ashley Davis (Hugo, Minn. / 26:17) and Kim Koecheler (St. Paul, Minn. / 26:56) rounded out the Cardinals' top seven.

"Sam's performance was one of the lone birght spots for us (Saturday)," admitted SMU coach Ward Berndt. "The course started out pretty hilly, so our (pre-race) strategy was to start out a bit conservative. The problem was, we never got out of the conservative mode and into a race mode.

"It's pretty hard to define, it just wasn't one of our better days."

Andy Boisjolie (Austin, Minn.) led the way for the SMU men — who placed 10th as a team — posting an 8K time of 29:11 in his fourth and final MIAC appearance. Andrew Rath (Hillsborough, N.J.) finished in 31:38, followed by Marty Howard (Chicago, Ill. / 31:40), Jerod Baertsch (Winona, Minn. / 31:59), Jon Sopcak (Steamwood, Ill. / 32:26), Gary Borash (Bowlus, Minn. / 32:48) and Mike Marek (Winona, Minn. / 34;01).

"Everyone's a little disappointed, but the nice thing is, we get another shot at a big meet in two weeks," said Berndt, referring to the NCAA Central Regional meet on Nov. 12. "Hopefully we'll be able to come out and put together a little better showing then."
