Flu bug has SMU feeling a little under the weather at Cardinals' final conference championship tune-up
The Cardinals, hit by the flu bug prior to last Saturday's JIm Drews / Tori Neubauer Invitationals, were forced to run shorthanded and it showed, as the SMU women settled for a 19th-place finish, while the Cardinal men placed 23rd. "It was a tough meet we had a number of runners under the weather, which really made things tough in terms of team placing," said Berndt, noting that SMU's top two women runners Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) and Tera Bollig (Cambridge, Minn.) and their No. 2 men's runner Aaron Raulin (Madison, Wis.) were ailing. "We were really looking forward to this meet, hoping that we could put together one final solid showing heading into (the MIAC). "It didn't quite work out that way, though." Alicia Hartung (Menomonie, Wis.) led the way for the SMU women, covering the 6K course in 24:14. Kate Boisjolie (Austin, Minn.) added a time of 24:23, followed by Sam Oreskovich (Prior Lake, Minn. / 24:49), Bollig (24:57) and Sarah Zweber (Elko, Minn. / 25:25). Andy Boisjolie (Austin, Minn.) paced the Cardinal men, posting an 8K time of 28:09. Martin Howard (Chicago, Ill.) added a time of 30:25, with Gary Borash (Bowlus, Minn. / 31:05), Andrew Rath (Hillsborough, N.J. / 31:09) and Jerod Baertsch (Winona, Minn. / 31:37) rounding out the SMU top five. "It's a little disappointing not to be at 100 percent but at least it happened this week and not two weeks from now," said Berndt. "We've still got a couple of tough training days ahead, then we'll cut back a bit and hopefully be at our peak for the conference championships." |
