People often ask me why I run. Until this year I always answered, “because I can.” As a senior on the verge of my last collegiate cross-country race, I realize my answer has always been wrong. I run partly because I can, but mostly because it’s part of me. Running at SMU the last four years has made it part of me — my team, the trails, the competition and the satisfaction gained by running have made it part of me.

I honestly look forward to my last race, not because it looms as an end, but because it serves as closure to four kick-ass years I spent running around Winona. The four years spent with my team have taught me dedication, identity, teamwork and friendship, even if we had to go through tough times to get it. I would like to say thank you to everyone I have run with, because I’ve been able to take something from them in order to improve myself, especially the 6 1/2 that ran with me this year.

I’ll start with Eric Saindon, even though he only ran the beginning quarter of the season, he put everything he had into running in order to improve. His drive was incredible.

Steve Adams and Pat Bansley, both freshmen, came into the year eager. Even though they both faced extreme workout and meet differences from high school they thrived and improved as the year went on. They are both great rookies with a sense of humor that I hope leads to the future of the team.

Aaron Raulin and Mike Marek had to push through injuries the entire season. In their way, they both showed a determination to get back out and pick it up. I have to say thanks to Raulin for pushing me all year, because most of the season I was running away from his poofy-ass fro. You can bet when I line up for my last meet I’ll be running from him one last time.

My longest running teammates, Andy Boisjolie (spelled Bo-is-jo-lie but pronounced with a French twist) at Pat Polasek (Po) are the biggest reason running at SMU became part of me. They have always been there for me in every way possible, and throughout the years we have gone through almost everything possible, from injuries to karaoke to kicking me in the ass when I needed a jump-start.

I can’t describe how much fun I’ve had since Day 1 freshman year. Sitting in an uncomfortable desk chair next to a red-headed kid I didn’t know (that was Po if you couldn’t guess), to lining up with guys I want to run for has been great. I run for the team and that is why running has become part of me. I will line up one last time, look my teammates in the eye and smile. My four years will be done and I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

Peace

P.S. I’m running from you Raulin, you, too, Po, so you guys better come and get me.
