The Cardinals let another seventh-inning lead slip away Tuesday, as SMU dropped Game 2 of its MIAC DH vs. Bethel 15-14 after leading 10-2, trailing 13-10, and leading 14-13. Bethel won the opener, 10-3. … Hamline, meanwhile, stepped out of conference play to Presentation, cruising to 6-0, 8-6 victories.

When it came to scoring runs, SMU matched Hamline inning-for-inning in the first game of their MIAC DH a year ago. The Cardinals scored runs in the first and third innings. The Pipers, meanwhile, plated their runs in the first and fourth innings. Problem was, the Cardinals' offensive output netted four runs one in the first and three more in the fourth while the Pipers parlayed their two innings of offense into nine runs four in the first and five in the fourth en route to the 9-4 MIAC win at Midway Stadium. Hamline transformed two Cardinal errors into five unearned runs, including four in the fourth inning, as the Pipers completed the MIAC sweep with a 9-1 victory.

After winning three of four against Carleton and Macaelster, the Cardinals have now dropped bothh ends of doubleheaders against Gustavus and Bethel. … SMU's 14 runs in its Game 2 loss vs. the Royals were the most in a losing effort since a 17-14 setback vs. Winona State in 1984. … Cardinal pitchers surrendered six home runs vs. Bethel including four in the Game 2 slugfest. … Brandon Haugh (Easton, Minn.) posted the Cardinals' first five-hit game of the season, going a perfect 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored in the Game 2 loss. … Pete Bissen (Fairmont, Minn.) launched his first collegiate home run vs. Bethel. … Thirteen of SMU's 14 runs in Game 2 vs. the Royals came in three innings a five-run third, a four-run fourth and a four-run seventh. … Brady Knudsen (Racine, Wis.) went 5-for-7 with four runs scored vs. the Royals. With their nonconference sweep of Presentation Wednesday, the PIpers have now won three of their last four games. … Charlie Paulson’s three-hitter in Game 1 vs. Presentation was the third time this season a Hamline pitcher has limited his opponent to three hits. … Hamline’s 13-run outburst in a Game 1 13-2 victory over St. Thomas on Tuesday was the Pipers’ highest run total since beating Finlandia 14-1 in their season-opener on March 1. … The Pipers’ 13-2 win over St. Thomas was also the team's eighth win over ranked opponents over the last three seasons. The Pipers have beaten St. Thomas three times, as well as Division III teams Wartburg and the University of Dallas, NAIA teams Bethany (Kan.) and Jamestown, and Division II Concordia-St. Paul. … Pat O’Laughlin enters today’s game riding a season-high and team-best seven-game hitting streak. … Andrew Bennett went 2-for-3 in Game 1 vs. Presentation and now boasts a team-leading 12 multiple-hit games, while also leading the team with nine multiple-RBI games. … Bennett needs just one home run to tie the Hamline single season record for home runs.
