The Blue Hawk and Jamestown College have been picked by the DAC coaches as the favorites to win the 2007 DAC title. The Blue Hawks and the Jimmies both received three first place votes and 23 votes total to top the polls. Dickinson State claimed the DAC regular season and conference tourney titles in 2006, while the Jimmies claimed the NAIA Region III title. … The Blue Hawks return six starting position players, four pitchers, and 13 total letter winners to the 2007 club. DSU finished the 2006 season with a 33-21 overall record with a 13-5 DAC record. … DSU returns a pair of NAIA All-Americans in outfielder Ed Warren and shortstop Adam Hurlbert. The two are just the third and fourth players in school history to be named to the All-American team. … Warren led the DAC in hitting (.412), slugging percent (.695), runs (50), hits (77), home runs (9), and RBIs (47). He also chipped in 10 stolen bases, 16 doubles, five triples, and had an on base percent of .491. Hubert, meanwhile, was third on the team in hitting (.365) and second in runs scored (42), RBIs (35), and hits (72). Hurlbert led the team with 15 stolen bases. He had a very impressive fielding percent of .951 from his shortstop position, committing just 12 errors in 243 chances. He broke the DSU single season record with 54 games played and 143 assists. He also added 11 doubles, two triples, and five home runs.

The Cardinals are coming off a pair of losses to Wartburg in their season-opener last Wednesday. SMU gave up six second-inning runs, and 10 fourth-inning tallies in falling to the Knights, 16-1. SMU held Wartburg to three runs in the nightcap, but three runs was enough, as the Knights completed the sweep with a 3-1 win. … Dickinson State kicks off its season with three straight doubleheaders against MIAC competition. The Blue Hawks open the on March 6th against Macalester. The Hawks also take on Saint John's on March 7, before facing SMU on March 8.

The Cardinals' Nick Winecke (St. Paul, Minn.) and Brady Knudsen (Racine, Wis.) accounted for six of SMU's 11 hits vs. Wartburg last Wednesday. Winecke was 3-for-5 (.600) with an RBI, while Knudsen was 3-for-6 (.500) with a double. … Winecke has now hit safely in five straight games (both game this year, and the last three last year). … Mike Mitchell (Mound, Minn.) was the tough-luck loser in Game 2 vs. the Knights, giving up two earned runs in 4.1 innings. … SMU managed just two extra-base hits vs. Wartburg both doubles while the Knights belted five doubles, a triple and a home run vs. Cardinal pitching. … Wartburg's 16 runs scored were the most allowed by SMU since Bethel plated 18 in an 18-4 Game 1 win on April 25, 2006. … Wartburg's 10, fourth-inning runs were the most allowed in a single inning by SMU since Winona State erupted for 12 runs in the third inning of a 23-3 WSU win on March 31, 2004. … With the doubleheader loss to Wartburg, the Cardinals have now lost their last five doubleheaders, dating back to a 2-0, Game 1 win over Macalester on April 19, 2006.. … The Knights scored all 16 of their Game 1 runs in two innings six in the second and 10 in the fourth.
