Popek, Black shine in Game 1, but Knights turn tables to earn split

WINONA, Minn. — It took an extra three days, but the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener was worth the wait for the Saint Mary's University baseball team.

The Cardinals would have rather waited another day or two to play Game 2, however.

Matt Popek (Eagan, Minn.) tossed a complete-game two-hitter and Kevin Black (Mahtomedi, Minn.) launched a pair of home runs and drove in four runs as SMU opened its MIAC season with an 8-3 victory over Carleton Tuesday afternoon at Max Molock Field.

The Knights' Ethan Guevin nearly did Popek one better in the nightcap, however, as the Carleton freshman took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning, before settling for a complete-game three-hitter in Carleton's 4-2 triumph in the nightcap.

"(The split) is a little disappointing, because I thought we got good enough pitching to win two games," said SMU coach Nick Whaley, whose team was supposed to play the Knights on Saturday, but rain and poor field conditions forced the games to be postponed Saturday, Sunday and Monday. "It's nice to finally get these games in, it's just unfortunate we weren't able to come away with a little better result."

Carleton picked up a pair of first-inning runs against Popek in the opener, the but SMU junior shut the Knights down after that, allowing just a fourth-inning single to Ben Cooprider over the final six innings.

Black, meanwhile, got the Cardinals' 11-hit offensive attack jump-started with the first of his two, two-run home runs in SMU's three-run third inning. The Cardinals added a single run in the fourth, two in the fifth and two more in the sixth on Black's second round-tripper.

The Cardinals' bats were silenced by Guevin's off-speed stuff in the nightcap. Mark Pederson (Lexington, Minn.) ended the Carleton freshman's bid for a no-hitter with a fifth-inning single, while Dan Cosgrove (South St. Paul, Minn.) belted a sixth-inning solo home run and Nick Kuhn's (Chicago, Ill.) laced a pinch-hit double in the seventh to account for SMU's other two hits.

"We weren't very patient at the plate (in the second game)," said Whaley. "We should have been sitting back and waiting on (Guevin's) fastball, rather than trying to go after his off-speed stuff.

"That first game was a good win for us, but to win two games of a doubleheader in this league, you have to have discipline and maturity — and we're still working on those things."
