The Cardinals and Knights split their MIAC doubleheader a year ago in Northfield, Minn. Carleton scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat SMU 6-5 in Game 1, while the Cardinals bounced back with a 5-4, eight-inning win in the nightcap. … Winona State scored four of its five runs with two outs, and two Warrior pitchers held the Cardinals to just one hit as SMU dropped a 5-1 nonconference decision to its cross-town rival Thursday. … The Knights, meanwhile, have been off since March 23, when they completed a 2-6 spring trip to Texas with a 7-0 loss to Southwestern.

Kevin Black (Mahtomedi, Minn.) accounted for SMU’s lone hit vs. Winona State, a lead-off, first-inning single. … Black has now hit safely in three straight games and has at least one hit in eight of the Cardinals’ 12 games. He also leads the team with four multiple-hit games. … Nick Winecke (St. Paul, Minn.) drove in the Cardinals’ run vs. WSU with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly. … David Reiter (Elgin, Minn.), bothered by shoulder problems all spring, made his first start of the season Thursday, giving up two runs on five hits in four innings. … The Cardinals’ loss to Winona State was their third straight and sixth in their last seven games. … Thursday’s loss marked the sixth time this season that SMU has been held to two runs or less — SMU is 0-6 in those games. … Winona State scored all five of its runs in the third (2) and fifth (3) innings — and the Cardinals have been now been outscred 26-11 in those two innings combined. … SMU has not won a game in which its opponent has scored more than two runs (0-10). … Mike Mitchell (Mound, Minn.) tossed SMU's first complete-game of the season, throwing a five-hitter with three strikeouts in the Cardinals' 5-2 win over Wartburg last Saturday. … SMU has outscored its opponents 9-1 in the seventh inning. … The Cardinals are 1-4 when scoring first, and 1-6 when their opponent scores first.

Luke Muellerleile led Carleton during their seven-game spring break trip by hitting .400 with two doubles in the six games he played. The senior appeared in his 100th game during the trip and has started in 101 baseball games after starting in 40 games in his football career. … Brian Sharkey was Carleton’s top pitcher during their spring trip, going 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA. He tossed six innings of six-hit ball in picking up Carleton’s only win of the trip, an 11-7 decision over Doane (Neb.). He allowed three runs, all unearned, and no extra-base hits in the victory.
